0014: Something to Tell You
Adrenaline, like a thick metal paste, pulses through Everly’s veins.
As the car spins once, twice, then bumps over something on the side of the road, forcing their car to lurch to a stop.
Everly’s hands tremble around the steering wheel, her breath held hostage.
Hayley groans. “What did you do? Run somebody over?”
“You okay?”
“Yeah. Hey look, I kept it in the cup.” Hayley holds up the tumbler, a grin expanding across her face.
“I don’t think we hit anything. I think we are okay.”
A set of headlights zip past them.
A sign in the distance reads, “Westwood.” They are only ten minutes from home.
She can do this.
Everly catapults the car back onto the highway. Hayley raises the tumbler.
“That’s the spirit!” Then Hayley cranks down her window, tips the cup over, and the sludge catapults out.
The wind slaps it back to the side of the car, leaving a racing streak of regurgitated peach schnapps.
Everly rolls her eyes. “You can keep my mug, by the way.”
“Life is Weird.’ W-e-r-i-d. Ha. That’s funny.”
Hayley slides the cup back into the center console, flicks the glove compartment open, and burrows her fingers through the contents. “I know it’s here somewhere…”
Hayley digs, then holds up a small baggie. “Ah-Ha!”
“Hayley, where did you get that?”
Hayley shoves the bundle back where it came from and her eyes flicker with mischief.
