0018: You Are Being Watched

0018: Everly feels dizzy, out of sorts, like the situation is squeezing her insides, causing a resurgence of the martini to pollute her brain.

The earth tilts at an unwelcome angle and her thoughts jumble. She’s not drunk. She must just be tired. Is this safe?

“Miss, need you to step out of the car.”

What choice did she have?

Everly opens the door, slides her high heel down to the gravel and raises up. Her yellow sundress sticks to the back of her legs.

Before Everly turns to face the officer, her gaze lingers on the billboard lit on the Medical building. Five actors, laughing at her behind their sultry eyes.

Everly shifts to face the officer. His teeth wrestle each other for space in his small mouth. “What did you drink tonight?”

“Two Absolute Vanilla martinis.”

The police officer notes the scent of alcohol on Everly’s breath. Her eyes are red and glossy, the scent of vomit wafting from the car. He does a lot of DUI arrests. The paperwork is his least favorite part.

“You have signs of a person who has consumed alcoholic beverages. We are going to conduct a driving under the influence investigation.”

Everly nods, her teeth clashing incessantly against each other.

She’s NOT drunk. Let him do his tests.

“Did you hear me?” The officer’s oboe-like voice drills into her.

Everly nods again.

The police officer slides a pencil out of the front of his shirt and holds it up.

“Follow the tip of my pencil. Don’t move your head, just your eyes.”

The officer in the patrol car opens his door and stands, one hand on the car frame. He watches the girl’s yellow skirt ripple in the breeze. A small upward twitch appears on the right side of his mouth.
