0031: The guard glares at Everly, screaming and swaying. Last time someone started to yell and shake like that, they bashed their head into the bars so many times the inmate had to be wheeled out on a stretcher.

The guard sighs. Today is her son’s 1st birthday and instead of being home with him, he is at daycare, and she is here, dealing with this crap.

She pushes back from her desk and makes her way to Everly to quell the altercation before it escalates into something she has to write a report about.

“Stop yelling.”

“I arrived last night on a DUI and they told me I would be released this morning, but I’m not being released. Why?”

“Name?”

“Everly Barker.”

“I’ll look into it.”

With a jolt of relief, Everly’s body merges back with itself. Someone is helping her. Soon she’ll leave the towers of wrapped PB&J and the decorative milk cartons behind. She’ll miss work, but she’ll make it to her meeting on Monday.

Moments later, the guard returns. She feels bad for Everly. This poor girl isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The guard wonders what Everly could have done. She looks innocent enough.

But then again, you never really know about people…
