0034: Conquered

0034: Everly wants to burst, to cheer, to raise her fist and share the glory with all the women in the jail cell who, most likely, would not care one little bit that she conquered dialing a collect call. 

It rings. 

And rings.

And rings. 

Her elation vanishes. What if no one picks up? 

“Please pick up…Please…”

Finally, a strong, thick, New York accent, “Hello?”

“Hello?” 

Static takes over the line. Then, a recording informs the NY accent that this is a collect call and will they accept the charges? 

Everly’s chest ignites with tingling nerves. “Please accept the call.” 

Big Red stares at Everly. She has given up watching her show and has decided to observe Everly instead. 

Everly fixes her eyes on the payphone, willing the call to go through.
