0037: Betrayal

0037: Betrayal

0037: “I got a hold of your mom,” Hayley says.

“Why would you do that?”

“What was I supposed to do? She said your aunt is on the way with bail money because she’s more fluid. Or something.”

“Liquid?”

“No…”

“Whatever. How much is my bail?”

“$50,000.”

“$50,000? I don’t have fifty thousand dollars!”

“Your mom said your aunt is coming with the money.”

“I don’t want my aunt paying $50,000. I’ll have to pay that back!”

“Oh. Right.”

“Will the 50K be returned to me? How does bail work?”

“I don’t know. You can call your mom. Or your dad. Your dad was the one who seemed to know what to do.”

Everly seethes. First she gets locked in jail after driving her drunk roommate home from a Halloween party, and then her drunk roommate calls her parents. What is she, twelve?

Everly has the urge to clap her hands together with supreme frustration the way her father would when he was upset. One loud slam of two meaty palms.

“I’ll call them.”

“Sorry.”

What is she sorry for? Calling her parents? Talking her into going to a Halloween party she didn’t want to attend? Getting her arrested? Making her miss the most important meeting of her life?

Everly needs to get off the phone. She can’t listen to this.

“One more thing…” Hayley says.
