0043: Bail

0043: Bail

0043: Steady and low. Everly’s father takes the phone.

“Your aunt is about ten minutes away. They may not let her pay cash. If they don’t, then she has to go through a bail bondsman.”

“What is a bail bondsman?”

“A company. A middle man. You pay them the 50,000 and when you show up to court, they give it back. They take 10%.”

“They keep five thousand dollars?”

“Yes.”

“Is that the only option? Do I have to do bail? Won’t they just let me go?”

“From what I understand, a judge will hear your case, and then you’ll get released at some point.”

“When?”

“They won’t say, but court opens again tomorrow at 9am.”

Everly does a quick calculation. If she wasn’t seen right at 9am there was a good chance she wasn’t going to make her meeting.

“I’ll pay bail.”

Through the silence, Everly can feel her father’s relief.

 “Good.”

It is unexpected.

Their concern.

Why are they being so nice?
